Bullies and Psychos

My best friend Dawnn always calls me a bully because I try relentlessly to make her watch and love the same shows I watch and love: Sherlock, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Parks and Recreation…

In fact, over dinner last weekend, I begged her to watch the Sherlock episode “A Scandal in Belgravia.” I talked about it so much that I thought I wore her down, and I was pretty sure I would get a text the next morning about how amazing it was.

And I did get a text…about Cupcake Wars.

The irony here is that she was the bully when it came to a show she loved: Psych. I do believe the words “You’re dead to me” came out of her mouth when she realized I had never seen it. But, because I’m a good friend and listened (these italics are intended for you, Dawnn Maloney), I went home and caught up on the first three seasons. I was hooked and became an immediate Psycho. I watched every season after that, waited in long lines at Comic Con for panels, quoted Shaun and Gus, wrote a blog post* about the show with her, enabled her mad crush on James Roday, dreamed of recreating the famous “Fries Quatro Queso Dos Fritos,” said “Suck it” way too much, looked for pineapples everywhere in real life, waited in line for ten hours for the midnight premiere of the Psych musical after driving twelve hours to San Diego, waited for months for it show again on tv, bought the soundtrack, and now wait impatiently for the premiere this January 8: “Lock, Stock, Some Smoking Barrels and Burton Guster’s Goblet of Fire.”

In the end, I’m glad I let her bully me into watching Psych. It’s truly one of most clever shows out there right now and I love being a Psycho, just the way I know one day she will love being a Whovian.

*This is the blog post we wrote a couple of years ago, when the show was entering Season 6 and was only 88 episodes in, hence the title. It was the most fun I’ve ever had writing a blog post.
